Manifesta has embarked on a new pilot project Breaking into the Museum, a creative initiative for young people, focusing on heritage and fresh interpretations and perspectives in curating for museums.

Working with local bases in 3 European cities and their suburbs/inner cities – London, Paris and Lisbon- this project will engage Museums, young people (15 to 19 years’ old), video artists and creative film-makers in a vibrant exercise leading to the presentation of provocative cultural narratives, as seen through the fresh eyes of the young people participants– in the form of short video-works.

Breaking into the Museum will promote youth participation; propose ‘radical’ intervention in heritage curating as an exciting form of 21st century cultural activism and engagement; bring new participating audiences to the museums; contribute to the re-modelling of museums as contemporary public spaces - and, directly engage with project-partner museums in London, Paris and Lisbon in the pursuit of these objectives.

The project started in London, with the Museum of London and funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and we are currently finalising funding for Paris and Lisbon, working with respective city museums Musée carnavalet and Museu da CIdade, and with the support of the European Cultural Fundation, Mairie de Paris. More information coming soon!
